Disintegrating II by Fabian Oefner

The Photographer Took Apart Iconic Cars Only to Digitally Reconstruct Them
Posted by Gestalten—10/2016

Each image in Fabian Oefner’s Disintegrating II series is a composite of over 2,000 photographs. The artist deconstructed scale models of five iconic cars, then photographing every bolt and screw. He later rearranged them digitally, creating composites that show the vehicles mid-explosion. Between the clean lighting and sheer impossibility of the images, the series gives off the impression that it is a complex rendering. Nevertheless, Oefner’s series are likely the only time most of us can catch a glimpse at an exploding Bugatti.

From the outside looking in, the exterior of a building or a body offers little insight into the inner workings of a system. To find out more, we need to take apart the pieces. Edited by Juan Velasco and Samuel Velasco, our new book Look Inside features cutaway illustrations and cross-sectional diagrams that offer a new perspective on the world around us.
