The Emperor’s New Clothes

Deep in Pablo Martínez Muñiz and Héctor Orruño’s Chamber of Curiosities
Posted by Gestalten—06/2017

For their series “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, photographer Pablo Martinez Muñiz and art director Héctor Orruño tapped into a bodily anxiety to display the Taller de Feeas’ line of idiosyncratic jewelry. Each piece in the line is an amalgamation of individual parts found in flea markets and antique shops, grafted together into accessories. From there, Muñiz and Orruño embedded the jewelry on fruits and vegetables. The series is delicately shot with glossy ribbons highlighting the luminous glow that renders each bulb or leaf into an uncannily fleshy body adorned with semi-spheric eyeballs. Abstract and surreal, there’s a sneaking sense that the masses are simply misshapen forms not unfamiliar to those that we ourselves occupy.

For art directors, photographers, and stylists, product photography proves to be a field ready for reinvention. Get to know the creatives around the world who are reimagining the wheel in classic forms in our book The Still Life
