Manga Chairs by Nendo

The Japanese Design Firm Transformed Two-Dimensional Symbolism into a Series of Seats
Posted by Gestalten—05/2016

Traditionally, manga is a publishing format that uses flat images and abstraction to tell a story over a series of panels. Drawing from the narrative structure deeply routed in Japanese culture, design firm Nendo built a series of 50 chairs that conjured a sense of story and referenced manga’s design elements, such as speech bubbles used to visualize sounds and droplets of sweat used to indicate a nervous sweat. The chairs were installed on a large-scale platform as part of Milan Design Week 2016.
