The Color Project by Adrien Broom

The Series of Monochromatic Photographs Took Over Two Years to Complete
Posted by Gestalten—11/2015

Given all that Adrien Broom does for her artwork, it seems limiting to call her a photographer. For The Color Project, the Brooklyn-based fine artist took on the role of the set designer, casting director, videographer, and shutterbug while working on a photo series that took over two years to complete. The project follows a young girl as she travels through eight monochromatic worlds, starting from her all-white bedroom and continuing through the orange, autumnal forest and the deep, blue sea. Eventually, the protagonist arrives back to her bedroom, trailing colorful spoils from each of her destinations. Each set was designed, constructed, and then photographed by Broom and a team of volunteers who supplied their time, energy, and materials to create the ethereal atmospheres. As the shoots took nearly a year, The Color Project also documents the young model as she ages during the time passed between shoots.

Explore the world through the lens of Broom below, and discover the work by other photographers from around the globe in Gestalten’s photography books.
