Five Fields Play Structure

Fun Before Function
Posted by Gestalten—05/2017

The Five Fields Play Structure in Lexington, Massachusetts, was built to have no purpose: Matter Design and FR|SCH Projects put fun before function to create a space for exploration. Built within a community founded on intentional togetherness and a sense of unity, the play structure reflects the neighborhood’s emphasis on coming together. It’s made from a series of intersecting wooden volumes adorned with ropes, footholds, and stairs: while some areas extend to cantilevered platforms, others project above or sink below to create a diverse set of levels and hide-aways for children to discover.
