January Shop of the Month

Schwesterherz offers a bountiful selection of premium stationery from their two locations in Berlin, alongside a highly-disciplined collection of beautiful gifts for the discerning customer. We spoke to the owner about our January Shop of the Month to find out more.

When did it all start?

Schwesterherz first opened for business eight years ago in Friedrichshain, Berlin. Back then, Friedrichshain was known more for its nightlife—the neighborhood wasn’t known for being a shopping hub yet.

What was the reason behind the opening of the store?

At some point, I became aware that, though I was living in Friedrichshain, I was going to Mitte and to Prenzlauerberg to pick up beautiful greeting cards and gift wraps, so I decided to open a paper shop in my own apartment building.

Could you describe the neighborhood in which the store is located?

Friedrichshain lives a double life. In the day, many young families and tourists pass through the neighborhood; at night, the party guests and pickpockets come around for the many nearby clubs. Berghain is in Friedrichshain, but so is a fragment of the Berlin Wall, open for all to see.

Please describe the kinds of books and other merchandise that you carry. What do you offer your customers?

Schwesterherz is a stationary shop on a mission to offer a special selection of greeting cards and gift wrap. We also carry books and a selection of home accessories that are curated with an eye for quality and design. We are proud to present a selection of Gestalten’s lifestyle, travel, and children’s books as well.

What are your favorite Gestalten books?

I love the Once in a Lifetime series and hope that a third volume is coming soon.

What are your customers' favorite Gestalten books?

Our customers also love your travel books, and The Journey is our best seller.

Who might be seen visiting the store? What kinds of people shop there?

Our customers are often interested in design who like to shop off the beaten path. I would guess that most of our customers are between 20- and 40-years old, and they’re usually looking for a beautiful gift to give a loved one.

Do you do anything at your store besides sell books? Do you, for example, have any events or exhibitions there?

Not so far.

Is there anything else about the store that you'd like us to mention?

We have two branches of Schwesterherz: one in Friedrichshain and one in Kreuzberg!
